Bloemfontein - Star middle distance runner, Johan Cronjé of Bloemfontein has been omitted from the South African team to participate in the upcoming CAA African Senior Championships in Marrakech, Morocco from 10 to 14 August.

According to the team list on Free State Athletics’ website, the runner's name does not appear, and neither the name of André Olivier.

Athletics South Africa President, Alex Skosana, told OFM Sport that he could not comment on the matter until he has spoken to his selectors, but admitted that the initial squad had to be cut.

The national record holder, Cronjé who was named as South Africa’s male athlete of the year, won South Africa’s only medal at the IAAF World Championships in Moscow last year.

Cronjé's trainer, DB Prinsloo, who was named as the South African Athletics Coach of the Year for 2013, chose not to comment on the matter for now.

Olivier won a bronze medal at the 2008 World Junior Championships.

Wayde van Niekerk, Elizna Naude and Chris Harmse are the only Free State athletes in 36 member squad.

Cronjé departs for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Sunday.
