Bloemfontein - South Africa have become the first team, other than New Zealand to win the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.

The men in green-and-gold stunned the four-time Champions 17-12 in the final last night to seal the Commonwealth rugby sevens gold at Ibrox Stadium in Glasgow.

The 'Boks were dealt a major blow early in the match when skipper Kyle Brown was replaced after just two minutes with shoulder injury sustained during a tackle.

Seabelo Senatla, who was the star of the Games, scored his first of two tries on the stroke of half-time to see the scores locked at 7-7 at the break.

The South Africans took the lead shortly after the break when Senatla went over for his second try, largely thanks to outstanding work and an offload by stalwart, Frankie Horn.

South Africa finished the first match day unbeaten after a 36-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago, 50-0 drubbing over the Cook Islands and a 20-0 win over Kenya.

They then beat hosts, Scotland 35-12 in the quarter-finals, before dispatching the ever difficult Samoa 35-7 in the semi-finals.

Senatlas' two tries in the final sealed the speedster tournament with a tally of 11 tries.

In the bronze medal match, Australia were always in control against Samoa with two first-half tries by Greg Jeloudev to set them nicely  to an emphatic 24-0 win.

South Africa’s gold brought their tally to 18 medals, of which three are gold, four are silver and seven are bronze.
