Gold for SA's women's fours | News Article
A big bravo for South African lawn bowlers Susan Nel (skip), Tracy-Lee Botha, Santjie Steyn and Esme Steyn who won a magnificent gold medal for their nation when beating Malaysia 14-9 (15 ends) in the final of the Women’s Fours at the XX Commonwealth Games here in Scotland.

Down 9-4 on the 9th end, the Green and Gold girls rallied and went 4, 1,1,2,1,1 to wrap it up. Said Allan Freeman, Bowls SA president, in Scotland for a World Bowls summit: “Fantastic effort; I was choked with emotion. And on Monday the Men’s Trips have a chance at another gold medal – too fantastic. And do not forget Colleen Piketh, what a player – she showed she belongs among the best singles players in the world, to play for bronze.”

After the Protea women’s quartet had played magnificently to edge England 12-10 in a quarter-final on Saturday, they came out yesterday and raised the bar again in beating home favourites Scotland 15-12 in a semi-final.  Malaysia, coached by Dr Simon Botha, a South African, had beaten New Zealand in a 13-11 nailbiter.

Colleen Piketh went down fighting 21-18 against a former world singles champion in England’s Natalie Melmore in a semi-final clash.

The Men’s Triples played superbly to reach the final where Northern Ireland awaits. Skip Bobby Donnelly had warm words for Pierre Breitenbach and Prince Neluonde after the trio had beaten New Zealand 19-17 in a quarter-final and then vaunted Australia 18-4 in the semis.

Namibia astounded everyone but themselves by reaching the semi-finals of the Men’s pairs before succumbing to the powerful Malaysians 23-15; the winners there play Scotland for gold; Namibia plays for bronze against England.
