Bloemfontein - Northern Ireland's Rory McIlory, who won the Open Championship a few weeks ago, will go into this year's final major this week as the new world number one.
The 25-year-old rallied from a three-stroke deficit to beat Spain's Sergio Garcia by two strokes at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational.
The win saw him dethrone Australia’s Adam Scott at the top of world rankings, just days before the PGA Championship tees-off at the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky.
Former world number one and 14-time major champion, Tiger Woods, looks like a doubtful starter for Valhalla this week, after withdrawing from the Bridgestone.
Should Woods play in Louisville, he will be paired alongside Phil Mickelson.
Furthermore nine South Africans will be in the field for this weeks tournament. They include Ernie Els, Charl Schwartzel, Louis Oosthuizen, Tim Clark en Richard Sterne.
The 96th PGA Championship tees off on Thursday.
