Bloemfontein - Rory McIlroy, has become just the seventh golfer in the history of the sport to have won the last two majors of the year.
World number one, McIlroy won his fourth major title by capturing the PGA Championship in a dramatic shotmakers' showdown over the back nine at rain-softened Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky.
Three weeks after winning the Open Championship, the 25-year-old from Northern Irishman recorded his second major victory in a row and third consecutive win overall in emphatic style.
“It was a different way to end a major, that’s for sure. The birdie on 17 was huge, I had little bit of a cushion but I knew that one of the guys, if not two, Ricky and Phil were going to make a birdie there.
“So to give myself that two-shot cushion coming up the last was really important.
“I hung in tough, I didn’t have the best of starts, so I just stayed patient and wait for my turn an eventually it came,” said the now four-time major champion.
Speaking about join the elite club of players to have won four majors, McIlroy said he has now elevated himself to a totally different level.
“I thought I elevated myself to a different level after winning the Open, but winning PGA Championship, my fourth major by the age of 25 has sort of elevated me again to a whole new different level.
“I’m on the same par now as Ernie Els, Ray Floyd, one behind Seve (Ballesteros), one behind Phil (Mickleson), at the age of 25, I never thought in my wildest dreams I would get here this quickly.
Els was the top South African in the field, finishing in tied 7th following an outstanding final round.
The Big Easy fired a final round of 6 under par 65 to end the on 11 under par.
