Whiteley back in Bok squad | News Article

Bloemfontein - Barely five days after being released from the Springbok squad, Lions captain and Commonwealth Games gold medalist, Warren Whiteley, has been re-called.

Whiteley is back in the squad to replace Willem Alberts, who still hasn’t recovered from his hamstring injury.

The Lions backrower toured with the Springboks to Argentina, where they beat the Pumas 33-31 in a hard fought contest in Salta.

Alberts underwent a fitness test yesterday afternoon and although his hamstring is recovering well, he experienced some nerve irritation in his lower back and was sent for scans.

Team doctor, Craig Roberts, confirmed Alberts will undergo further medical treatment.

“Willem requires further investigation of the symptoms and will see a number of specialists to determine the optimal management plan to get him back performing on the field as soon as possible,” said Roberts.

Meanwhile, coach Heyneke Meyer said that although Juan Smith was on standby, the former Toyota Cheetahs captain requested more time to work on his match fitness.

“Juan has very high standards and he wasn’t happy with his performance in Salta,” said Meyer.

The Springboks depart for Australia and New Zealand tomorrow.

They will faces the Wallabies at the Paterson Stadium in Perth, next week Saturday.
