Ryder Cup teams named for Gleneagles | News Article

The final picks have been made for the 2014 Ryder Cup between Europe and the USA at Gleneagles in Scotland.

European captain, Paul McGinley named England’s Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter as well as Scotland’s Stephan Gallacher as the final three players for the his 12-man side.

Poulters’ name raised a few eyebrows with some feeling his compatriot, Luke Donald, was unlucky to miss out.

McGinley speaks of the three picks he made to compliment the 9 automatic qualfiers, which include world number one, Rory McIlroy.

“Having played a Ryder Cup in my home country I know what it’s going to feel like for Stevie and how proud he will be, and his family as well too,” McGinley said about the Gallachers’ selection.

“Lee, despite the fact that he has played so many Ryder Cups, and I think this is going to be his ninth appearance…there was a real sense of pride with Lee, that he’d made another team,” said the Irishman.

“Very gracious, very humble about the fact that he was going to be on this team,” McGinley added about Westwood.

"Ian Poulter is a bundle of energy whenever you speak to him. You could feel the energy coming down the phone," McGinley said.

McGinley, who partnered Donald during the Englishman's first Ryder Cup said breaking the news to his friend was very difficult.
