Europe make it three in a row at the Ryder Cup

Europe make it three in a row at the Ryder Cup | News Article

Yesterday saw Europe beat the United States of America to win the Ryder Cup for a third successive time, and the 10th time since 1979 in the 40th playing of the prestigious tournament.

A tall order for Tom Watsons’ USA team didn’t hold them back from fighting to the bitter end.

Wins by Greame McDowell, Rory McIlroy, Martin Kaymer and Sergio Garcia were enough to setup Welsh rookie Jamie Donaldson to win in the 3rd last match by beating Keegan Bradley with a fantastic approach on the 15th which saw Bradley concede the hole and the match.

Unaware he had already retained the cup for Europe on the previous hole with half a point, Donaldson hit a 9 iron from 146 yards to within 18 inches of the pin on No. 15 at Gleneagles.

The 38-year-old Welshman played down his approach shot and said it was team effort, however conceded that it was one of the most special shots in his life.

"I knew things were coming down to my game. I was just trying to win my point.

"And it was the shot of my life."

The Ryder Cup was effectively won, but it still needed Bradley to officially concede a 4-and-3 victory, which he did when he saw how close Donaldson's ball was to the hole.

"It's hard to describe how good it is," Donaldson said.

"There's nothing else like it in golf. It's just a total one-off. It's just a huge, huge thing, and it's just been amazing to be a part of it," the player added.

The next Ryder Cup will be played at the Halzeltine National Golf Course in Minnesota, USA in 2016.
