McIlroy with World Match Play | News Article

World number one Rory McIlroy has held onto his top ranking after winning the WGC-Cadillac Match Play Championship at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco.g in 30th, while his good friend Charl Schwartzel in back in 38th.

The 26-year-old Northern Irishman beat American Gary Woodland in the final to add the World Match Play title to his four majors.

It was a fitting birthday gift for McIlroy turned 26 today and trailed just 26 holes throughout the championship in beating Jason Dufner, Brandt Snedeker, Billy Horschel, Hideki Matsuyama, Paul Casey, Jim Furyk and Woodland.

In the final he didn’t trail a single hole even though he never fired on all cylinders throughout.

The win is the players first in the USA this season and he feels just worked out for him.

“Once I got up on the match, I just tried to up the intensity a little bit and take advantage of that,” McIlroy said.

“I feel like every time I get in these positions to win tournaments and close tournaments out and I do it, it adds to that ability to really knuckle down when I need to," he added.

McIlroy leads the world rankings on 11.21 points and is followed by the 21-year-old Texan, Jordan Spieth on 9.08.

Louis Oosthuizen is the top South African in the ranking in 30th, while his good friend and compatriot, Charl Schwartzel in 38th and Brandon Grace is 39th.
