The Maurtitius Open tees-off at the Heritage course | News Article

The inaugural Mauritius Open golf tournament teed-off a little earlier today in a historic day for the sport with the tournament being the first ever co-sanctioned event between the Sunshine, European and Asian Tours.

The lucrative tournament has attracted some of the biggest names on the three tours and sees Denmark’s Thomas Bjorn and South Africa’s George Coetzee as two of the early favourites.

Bjorn who has played Ryder Cup golf for Europe and is the 2013 Nedbank Golf Challenge champion returns from injury and will be looking for a good start during todays’ first round.

All the players are impressed with both the course and the location, and the Great Dane says there are no in-betweens on the Heritage Course.

“This is a wonderful golf course. It is a little bit different in that there are a lot of tough holes and some stretches where it isn’t that difficult. It’s a mixture between the two.

“You’ve got to manage your way around the course and not get too frustrated as you will get a stretch where you’ll do well to come out level par, but there will be opportunities. You’ve got to manage your game, your brain, and your expectations. Mentally it is more testing.”

Bloemfontein’s Dean Burmester tees-off a little later today in his attempt to win the 1 million euro prize money.
