World number one, Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland will miss next weeks’ Open Championship at St Andrews in Scotland.
The 26-year-old defending champion has withdrawn from British Open after failing to recover from an ankle injury he sustained playing soccer over the past weekend.
The player took to the social media platform, Twitter to announce his withdrawal from the event and added that he has his sights set on long-term goals.
The withdrawal of the four-time major champion with undoubtedly see the USA’s Jordan Spieth be the top contender to lift the Claret Jug next week Sunday.
Spieth is on track to claimed a rare golf slam after winning both the Masters and the US Open over the past few months.
The 144th edition of the Open at the home of golf tees off next week Thursday.
