Folwer and Spieth win leading into the Open | News Article

Rickie Fowler of the USA has won the Scottish Open at the Gullane Golf Club in East Lothian ahead of this weeks’ Open Championship.

After thrilling final round, Folwer edged France’s Raphael Jacquelin and his America compatriot, Matt Kuchar by one stroke to  win with a total of 12 under par.

The Scottish Open is traditional regarded as the final preparation ahead of the year's third major, and Folwer says the only better than winning at Gullane will be to lift the Claret Jug this week.

"It's pretty special, I played great coming in and it's been a great week.

"I will have a bit of time tonight to let it sink in and get right back at it next week.

"This is a big win. I had a couple of missed cuts after winning the Players, which was disappointing, so it feels good to get back on form.

"There are a few things we can tighten up for next week but I am looking forward to getting back to St Andrews, the Home of Golf, and getting into contention.

Meanwhile, in Silvis, Illinois, world number two, Jordan Spieth has won his second John Deere Classic.

Spieth fired a final round of three under par 68 to finish on 20 under par and beat Tom Gilis in a play-off.

The 21-year-old Texan who has won both the Masters and US Open this year says he looking forward to getting over to St Andrews.

“I came here for a reason, and we accomplished that reason, and certainly have some momentum going into next week.

"I’ve got plenty in the tank.

"Leading into the Masters, those couple of weeks right before could have taken a lot out of me with a runner-up finish and then a play-off loss. And we rebounded nicely.

Spieth is still well on track to win the illusive career slam in golf, and will be considered as favourite to win at the Royal & Ancient with world number one, Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland having withdrawn due to an ankle injury.

The 144th Open Championship at the home of golf tees off on Thursday.
