Boom gets special Sunshine Tour invite | News Article

Former Proteas all-rounder and Knights captain, Johan van der Wath will be taking one step closing to realising his post-cricket dream.

The fiery former cricketer has received a special invite to play in next week’s Sun Windmill Challenge at the Bloemfontein Golf Club.

The Sunshine Tour is currently in Parys for the Vodacom Origins of Golf which teed-off at Vaal de Grace this morning and will be moving over to the City of Roses next week.

Earlier this year Van der Wath missed out on earning his tour card during the final round of the gruelling Q-School played in Bloemfontein as well.

The long-hitting Van der Wath has been earning his keep on the Big Easy tour where things haven’t gone all his way.

Van der Wath told OFM Sport that hopefully this will be the first of many events for him on the main tour.

“I’ve been playing on the Big Easy, I tried to get my card last year but missed by a shot, but hopefully this is the first of many and is on a special invite, it also looks like I might have temporary membership for the rest of the season.

“Hopefully it goes well, especially with it being on my home course.”

Van der Wath had a decent Q-school earlier this year and was still in the running going into the final round, however he feels that next time around he will be much better prepared.

“I wouldn’t say it went fantastic, I played decently but I decided two-months before that I was going to play Q-school and I don’t think I put in all the hard work by then.

“That’s changed and I’ve put in the hard work the past year or so, but as people know golf is all about small margins and it was a little bit disappointing.

“It’s another year and I think the hard work will probably start paying off sooner rather than later.”

Van der Wath will be the third member of the Bloemfontein Golf Club to play in the Sun Windmill Challenge MJ Viljoen and Makhetha Mazibuko.

Dean Burmester, Alex Haindl and Burger Heckroodt all play for Schoeman Park Golf Club and have also all entered.

The tournament runs from 16 to 18 September, 2015.
