Burmester wins Sun Windmill Challenge by 4 strokes | News Article

Dean Burmester of Bloemfontein has become the first three-time winner on the Sunshine Tour for 2015 by clinching the Sun Windmill Challenge at the Bloemfontein Golf Club.

The 26-year-old golfer won the tournament in a windy City of Roses by four strokes on Friday by carding a final round of seven under 65 to beat Callum Mowat with a tournament total of 18 under par.

Burmester entered the third and final round one stroke off the pace to Rourke van der Spuy who was the overnight leader on 12 under.

Bogeys on the fourth, sixth and eleventh made matters difficult for Burmester, however two bogeys by Mowat and five by Van der Spuy kept the Zimbabwean-born golfer in the hunt.

It was, however, the local golfer who won the tournament for himself by sinking five consecutive birdies between holes 12 and 16 and he capped off the superb win with a brilliant eagle on the 18th.

Following his win, Burmester said this had got to rank right up there with some of the best golf he has ever played.

“Under the gun it’s got rank right up there, I can only think of Zimbabwe and this one, they are pretty much as equal as the other.”

The player told OFM Sport that winning in his adopted city is very special indeed.

“It’s very special – Bloem has a really big space in my heart, I met my wife here and the whole town was really welcoming when we had the situation and moved down from Zim.

“So, it’s really, really emotional, I won a junior tournament here, and I won an amateur tournament here - so it’s really, really special to win a pro one here as well.

It was a good week for the Bloemfontein golfers, with Makhetha Mazibuko claiming the third place for his 12 under par for the tournament and in the process earned R56 000 in prize money. Burmester won R110 950 which keeps in 5th on the Sunshine Tours Order of Merit.

Burmester’s two other wins in 2015 were at the Golden Pilsener Zimbabwe Open and at the Lombard Insurance Classic.
