• 1901: The first motorists' organisation in SA, the Automobile Club of South Africa (called the Royal Automobile Club of SA since 1911), is founded in Cape Town.
• 1972: Access credit cards introduced in Great Britain.
• 1977: Paleontologist Elso Barghoorn announces that 34-billion-year-old one-celled fossils, the earliest life forms, had been discovered.
• 1998: Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Chairman Yasser Arafat reach a "land for peace" agreement.
• 2001: Apple releases the iPod.

• 1907: Karl Kielblock, SA author of historical and detective books, is born in Beaufort West, Cape Colony.

• 1984: NBC aired BBC footage of the Ethiopian famine.

• 1955: Dominican League moves to winter baseball for 1st time
• 1968: Kip Keino of Kenya wins the Olympic gold medal for 1,500 metres in 3 minutes 34.9 seconds.
• 1993: Joe Carter MLB Outfielder (Toronto Blue Jays) hits a World Series winning walk-off home run against the Philadelphia Phillies.
• 2013: Boston Red Sox defeat St Louis Cardinals in game 1 of the MLB 2013 World Series.
