Committee questions NW department's payment to companies | News Article

Mahikeng - Parliament's public accounts watchdog committee in North West has questioned millions in payments made by local government to companies whose contacts were cancelled five years ago.

The Standing Committee on Provincial Public Accounts (Scopa) says it will meet with the North West Department of Public Works and Roads in this regard within 14 working days.

This follows a meeting yesterday over media reports on the adjudication of the Bona Bona and Vostershoop roads.

It emerged during the meeting that payments amounting to R45 million were paid to the companies despite their contracts being cancelled by the department in 2009/10.

Committee Chairperson, Mahlakeng Mahlakeng said he found it strange that out of more than 100 contracts of companies cancelled in 2009 only these two were paid.

He further warned MEC for Public Works, Madoda Sambatha, that the situation looks worse than in 2009 where three senior officials were sacked due to budget irregularities.
