World Prematurity Day today─── DANE BEISHEIM 12:10 Mon, 17 Nov 2014
Potchefstroom - Today is World Prematurity Day, aimed at raising awareness around the issue of premature births.
In South Africa about 14% of all babies are born too early and are subsequently classified as premature babies needing special care to stave off health complications.
According to UNICEF around 22% of all low birth weight infants born in developing countries are born in Africa.
North West University's Welma Lubbe says a baby who is born before 37 completed weeks of pregnancy is classified as pre-term.
