World Leprosy Day marked─── THANDI XABA 12:28 Tue, 27 Jan 2015
Bloemfontein - Today marks World Leprosy Day and although it is still viewed as an ancient disease leprosy affects over 200 000 people worldwide.
The disease is caused by bacteria that effects the skin and nerves and can cause disability.
ER24 spokesperson Pieter Rossouw says over 17 000 people suffer from leprosy in Africa and sufferers need not suffer in silence because there is a cure.
The disease is not highly contagious like the common flu and can develop from six months to 40 years.
Researchers propose it can spread person to person by nasal secretions or droplets.
