Port Elizabeth - A South African father has spoken with pride of the role that his son is playing in the search and rescue operations on Mount Everest.
Lyle Turner was one of many who survived the avalanche that was triggered by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake which struck Nepal over the weekend.
Speaking on eNCA this afternoon, Peter Turner, said that shortly after the avalanche hit, Lyle made contact with the family to say that he and his team were safe.
Meanwhile, in an earlier interview with Algoa FM News, 25-year-old Turner said he was hoping to summit Everest on May 25 and plant a South African flag and that of his charitable Foundation for Huntington's Disease. He also spoke then of the inherent risks associated with attempts to summit the world's highest peak.
Meanwhile it is feared that the death toll could reach 10 000.
