570+ show budgies coming to Bloemfontein this weekend─── 09:35 Wed, 22 Jul 2015
Bloemfontein - The national show of the Budgerigar Society of South Africa will be hosted this weekend (25- 26 July 2015) at the Sandstone Sleeper Estate outside Bloemfontein.
It is expected that more than 570 show budgies will be participating in three competitive categories in which the exhibitors can enter.
“In 2012 the members voted to centralize the National Show in Bloemfontein and we are very excited about this decision. We now have a dedicated team that is responsible for all aspects of the show. We are also very excited that we have Dino Pocecco, an experienced World Budgerigar Organisation (WBO) judge officiating with two South African judges and all of these judges are champions in their own right," said Malcolm Taylor, Show Manager.
More than 42 exhibitors are expected to participate in the 26 color classes and three categories. The categories vary from champion, intermediate to novice. Awards, certificates and prizes will be awarded in 66 of the classes.
“The National Show is a great opportunity for the breeders and exhibitors in the country to show off their skills and their budgerigars. The BSSA places a great emphasis on socializing at the National and we will be honored to have many of the country’s top breeders attending this show, not only to see wonderful birds, but also to meet old and new friends that makes up this exciting hobby of ours” said Albert Oliver, Chairperson BSSA.
The Show committee invited Dino Pocecco, an Italian expert judge on budgerigar with more than 25 years experience in the breeding of budgerigars. Dino qualified in 2013 as World Budgerigar Organisation (WBO) judge and has represented Italy for four years on the WBO. He has judged budgerigars in France, Portugal and Italy. Dino Pocecco will judge the following colours: Light Green, Grey Green, Violet, Double Factor Spangle, Opaline Grey Green, Opaline Blue Series (Exl Grey), Yellowface, Greywing, Clearwing, Yellow &White.
Deon Davie is one of the two South African judges who will be judging at the show. Not only has he been breeding budgerigars since 1982 but has filled all positions on Club level, Chairman, Secretary, Show Manager and Show Secretary and also on National Level, from BSSA President, BSSA Chairman, Administrator, Judges Chairman and Judges Secretary. He breeds most colours and currently uses 50 breeding pairs. Although he likes exhibiting he also love judging and has judged abroad as well. He also enjoys the genetic side of this wonderful hobby. His aim is to breed quality budgies in all varieties. Deon will judge the following colours: Dark & Olive Green, Skyblue, Cinnamon Green Series, Cinnamon Blue Series, Opaline Green Series (Exlcl Grey Green), Opaline Grey, Lutino, Albino, Lacewing.
Andre Scholtz started breeding show budgies in 2000. He joined BSSA as a member in 2001. He is an active club member holding positions from Secretary to Club Chairman of the Free State Budgie Club and is currently serving on BSSA Management Committee since August 2013. He is also Secretary of the Judges Committee. As a keen exhibitor regularly participating on shows he is currently focusing more on the breeding side of the hobby. Andre breeds most colours. But his favourite colour to judge is Cobalt, Grey & Grey Green. 2015 is the first year Andre will be judging the SA National Show.
Andre will judge the following colours: Cobalt & Mauve, Grey, Spangle Green Series, Spangle Blue Series, Opaline Cinnamon Green Series, Opaline Cinnamon Blue Series, Recessive Pied, Any Other Colour or Variety.
