Worker kept 'hostage' by snake | News Article

Richards Bay - A man was kept "hostage" by a snake while he was busy working at an MTN tower near the port control room in Richards Bay on Thursday afternoon.

"A report from the scene is that the man had climbed up the tower to do work, but when he wanted to come down, he spotted a snake of more than a metre [in length] blocking his exit," Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said.

"[A] Netcare 911 base manager was called to the scene and had to climb up the outside of the tower to get to the worker. Using a rope rescue system, he brought the man... safely down to the ground level."

After the man was brought down, his rescuer clambered down the inside of the tower and caught the serpent.

"The snake was later released into a nearby bush."
