Potchefstroom - Roughly 5 000 residents have signed a petition against the proposed amalgamation of the beleaguered Ventersdorp Municipality and Tlokwe Municipality in Potchefstroom.
This is according to local DA Councillor Hans-Jurie Moolman, and follows after the petition was made available at various key points in Potchefstroom over the weekend. The forms will be sent to the municipal demarcation board shortly.
Moolman says that response to the proposed merging of the municipalities has been negative across the board.
Residents of Ventersdorp protested against the matter yesterday, and handed over a memorandum containing their grievances to the municipality.

According to police spokesperson Pelonomi Makau the situation has since calmed down, and no injuries nor arrests were reported.
