South African extreme swimmer Ryan Stramrood yesterday represented the country in a world first two-way relay attempt to cross the notoriously difficult North Channel, swimming from Ireland to Scotland and back to Ireland in approximately 30 hours.

He was part of a six man team, the others being from Ireland, Sweden, Finland, Estonia and the Czech Republic. He decided at a late stage to take up the gruelling 85km’s of swimming in temperatures of 12.5 degrees, and only had a month to prepare.

Speaking to OFM News earlier today, Stramrood says the fierce currents made it difficult on the day, along with the violent Lions Main jellyfish, which sting has devastating effects.

Stramrood’s aspiration is to solo swim from Ireland to Scotland in 2017.
