Solidarity: There is hope for ailing metal industry | News Article

Potchefstroom - Trade union Solidarity says there is hope for the ailing metal industry.

The union believes that although a long road to recovery still lies ahead, roleplayers have lately achieved numerous positive developments in the industry.

Marius Croucamp, head of the Metal Industry at Solidarity, says although ArcelorMittal yesterday announced that it could possibly retrench as many as 400 workers at its Vereeniging Mill, it is encouraging that the entire Vereeniging Mill will not be closed.

Croucamp believes talks between roleplayers, trade unions and the companies during the past few weeks contributed to the fact that operations at the Vereeniging Mill can continue. Initially, the entire mill would have closed which would have led to a loss of 1 200 jobs.

Croucamp, however, cautions that the metal industry is not out of danger and that thousands of jobs are still in jeopardy.
