International FAS awareness day commemorated─── THANDI XABA 15:52 Wed, 09 Sep 2015
Bloemfontein - Every year on September 9, people all around the world gather to raise awareness around Foetal Alcohol Syndrome.
This awareness day, commemorated since 1999, provides an opportunity to build awareness and knowledge about FAS.
Northern Cape Social Development Programme Manager, Mercia Fanie says awareness is particularly important as FAS is not curable but it is 100% preventable.
South Africa has been reported to have the highest rate of the syndrome. According to the Foundation for Alcohol Related Research, six million people in the country are affected by having been exposed to alcohol in the womb.
