Respected sports photographer dies | News Article

Cape Town - One of the country’s most respected sports photographers, Duif du Toit, has died.

The Gallo Images stalwart is understood to have suffered organ failure and passed away in a Johannesburg hospital on Thursday morning, weeks after undergoing surgery for kidney problems. He was 57.

CEO Bruce Stewart said Du Toit had won numerous photography awards over the years.

"He was extremely respected in local and international photography circles and was a key part of our team," he said.

“He had a rapport with especially professional rugby players and cricketers, who knew and trusted him. He was well liked and was always allowed into the teams’ change rooms and training sessions.”

Du Toit started his career at The Star newspaper before moving to Touchline Media in 1996. He had been with Gallo Images since 2006.

Stewart said the industry was devastated by Du Toit’s death.

"He was a cornerstone of the Gallo team – this is a massive loss and indeed a sad day. Duif was one of the most respected professionals."

Du Toit is survived by a wife and son.
