US comments on poultry negotiations | News Article

Bloemfontein - The US says it is not true that the removal of anti-dumping duties on US chicken would destroy the South African poultry industry.

US embassy spokesperson Jack Hillmeyer said in a statement South Africa already imports hundreds of millions of dollars of foreign chicken annually.

He says the removal of the anti-dumping duty against US chicken wouldn’t mean that US producers would replace the South African poultry industry, but merely that the US would compete against the other foreign producers already in the market.

Hillmeyer says domestic chicken producers are already protected from foreign imports by a 37 percent ad valorem import duty on bone-in imported chicken.

The statement comes in the midst of negotiations between the South African and US poultry associations.

According to a report on landbou.com, there are fears that a failure to reach a consensus on chicken imports from the US to SA could see South Africa excluded from the renewal of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which facilitates trade access opportunities.
