Pretoria - South Africa has more than 660-thousand registered marks resulting in a credible animal identification and recording (AIR) system to aid with livestock traceability.
This was revealed during the symposium for AIR systems for traceability and livestock development in sub-Saharan Africa, hosted at the CSIR in Pretoria last week.
Farmer’s Weekly quotes Joel Mamabolo, director of animal health at the department of agriculture, as saying animal identification is compulsory ion SA.
Agriculture Minister Senzeni Zokwana meanwhile described South Africa’s AIR system as credible, with plans by the department to roll-out a genetic information system to other SADC countries.
Zokwana told delegates the animal identification system is important to help curb stocktheft and disease.
