Wool prices reach historic high | News Article

Bloemfontein - SA wool growers say the new record high for wool prices might be broken within a week as the industry holds its last sale of the season on 10 June.

Outgoing National Wool Growers Association (NWGA) Chairperson Harry Prinsloo says in the latest statistics, the Cape Merino Wool Indicator gained 4,7% to close at R140 p/kg for clean wool.

Prinsloo says the historic high was driven by the weak Rand and renewed interest from China:

'Positive wool outlook'

He is of the opinion that the last sale of the season could see the wool price climb by another 3-4%.

Commenting on the NWGA Congress held in Port Elizabeth at the start of June, Prinsloo says uncertainty over land reform featured prominently on the agenda. The congress was opened by Agriculture Minister Senzeni Zokwana and Prinsloo says they were reassured by the Minister’s approach:

Prinsloo has now stepped down as chairperson and says Gilo du Toit of Fraserburg was elected as his successor during congress.
