ARC patent promises multi-spectrum livestock vaccine | News Article

Bloemfontein - A team of researchers at the Agricultural Research Council (ARC) have filed a patent in the UK for a new virus vector that could create a platform for a multi-species, multi-disease livestock vaccine.

The research is undertaken in partnership with the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development, whose Assistant Deputy Minister of the Partnerships for Devlopments Innovation branch Elissa Golberg visited the ARC in Pretoria on June 8.

ARC Senior Research Scientist Dr David Wallace says the provisional patent is the result of work into, among others, Lumpy Skin Disease:

Other vaccines under development include a candidate vaccine for African swine fever (ASF).

Dr Arshard Mather, also a senior research scientist on the projectand says the work was well received by the Canadian delegation and explains the significance of the investment into South Africa's intellectual potential:

The scope of the project also extends to socio-economic impact studies among some of SA's farming communities, as well as training of small holder farmers.
