Looming closure of Clocolan milk depot threatens FS dairy industry | News Article

Bloemfontein - The Free State Legislature has heard that the looming closure of a milk depot in Clocolan will place even more strain on the dairy industry in the province.

DA MPL Roy Jankielsohn told Legislature the dairy industry continues to shed producers and jobs. Jankielsohn says milk producers have declined from almost 1000 in 2007 to a mere 316 in 2014.

in 2007, he says the province’s contribution to the country’s milk was standing on 18% but dropped to 9,5% by 2013.

He says the approximately 50 dairy farms in the Thabo Mofutsanyana District produce about 120 000 litres of milk per day.

Jankielsohn says they could be left without a market when the Montic depot in Clocolan closes at the end of September, leaving only 13 alternate buyers operating in the province.

Jankielsohn says production costs, such as electricity, fuel, grain, and other products, have skyrocketed over the past few years. He is calling on the provincial government to intervene.
