Brangus breed going from strength to strength | News Article

Bloemfontein - Buyers and onlookers attending an auction of select Brangus cattle in Bloemfontein have heard from the auctioneer that the breed is one of the fastest growing in South Africa in terms of popularity.

About 70 male and female animals, including several stud quality bulls, came under the hammer during the 5th annual Genelink Brangus production auction.

Brangus SA Breed Director John Rafferty was present at the auction and told OFM News that the prices realised at the recent national sale in Harrismith are a good indication that the breed is gaining popularity:

“We’ve come off an absolutely stunning national auction in Harrismith last month, where we sold over 70 bulls for nearly a R60 000 average.

“To us this is a great sign that Brangus is making headway and that it’s a good farming animal. It’s a docile animal with polledness and fairly hardy and this is why we think it’s becoming farily popular and becoming a cattleman’s choice.”

Rafferty says about 40% of South Africa’s Brangus population can be found in the Free State.

Today’s auction ended with a total of 32 bulls sold for an average price of R45 200. Rafferty says the highest price was R120 000.

Meanwhile South Africa will be hosting the Brangus World Congress at the Black Mountain Hotel in Thaba ‘Nchu in the Free State in May next year.
