More protection needed for Kathu artifact site─── OWEN KOCK 12:48 Sat, 26 Jul 2014
Owen Kock Kathu - The site in Kathu where stone tools and artifacts, aged between 700 000 and a million years old, were discovered to indicate the earliest form of human life, need to be preserved at all cost.
More than 10 000 pieces were discovered last year, and according to David Morris from the McGregor Museum in Kimberley, the find could be just the tip of the iceberg.
Morris says with all the development in and around Kathu, the site could be under threat, thus the site’s nomination for a Grade 1 National Heritage Site.
The unveiling of the find was done by archaeologists from the University of Cape Town, the University of Toronto and the McGregor Museum in Cape Town.
