• 1885: Marthinus Lourens de Villiers, composer of "Die Stem" (The Call of South Africa), is born in Paarl, Cape.
• 1965: Johan Bernard Zulch Keet, SA musician and leader of the Asaf choir in Johannesburg, dies.
• 1964: Rolling Stone concert in Ireland halts after 12 minutes due to riot.
• 1987: Guns & Roses song "Appetite for Destruction" is released.

• 1955: Beverly Hanson wins LPGA Battle Creek Golf Open.
• 1953: Jimmy Cook, SA cricket player, is born.
