Welkom - The corruption case against the Free State MEC of Health Benny Malakoane was this morning transferred to
the Bloemfontein Regional Court. Malakoane and seven other co-accused briefly appeared in the Welkom Regional Court on fraud and corruption charges to the tune of R13-million rand.

MEC of arts, culture, sport and recreation Mathabo Leeto is among the co-accused. Leeto is the former Executive Major of the Lejweleputswa district municipality and the Matjhabeng municipality.
Malakoane was calm and casually dressed for his brief appearance in connection with fraud and corruption charges dating back to his tenure as Matjhabeng Municipal Manager from 2007 to 2010.

He was joined in the dock by seven co-accused, including three company directors, his former PA Leona Nel and Matjhabeng Chief Financial Officer Louis de Bruin.

The state requested that the case be transferred to Bloemfontein and following a brief consultation with various legal representatives, the magistrate agreed to transfer the case, postponing it to 27 August.

Malakoane’s charges relate to alleged kickbacks to the tune of some R13 million for irregularly awarded contracts involving three companies, namely Gestetner, Quit Cell and Pole Adds.
