Bloemfontein - A police task team has been established in Bloemfontein to investigate a suspected cross-border car hijacking syndicate.

Park Road police spokesperson Chaka Marope says there's definitely been an increase in hijackings in the city in the recent past.

He says police suspect cars being stolen in Bloemfontein are destined for Lesotho.
In the latest incident on Friday night, a couple was lucky to escape after they were kidnapped and hijacked in Brandwag.

Marope says four suspects forced the 27-year-old man and his girlfriend into the boot of the vehicle and drove around with them for several hours before dropping them at an open space in Heidedal.

No arrests have been made.

Anyone with information can contact investigating officer TJ Maruping on 082 526-2683.

The suspects were driving a white VW Passat before the hijacking took place.
