Mangaung Mayor recommends water restrictions to council | News Article

Bloemfontein - After a delay of nearly two months, Mangaung Mayor Thabo Manyoni has recommended to council that level two water restrictions be implemented across the Metro.

The possible water restrictions were first published in the Government Gazette by the national department of water affairs in March. The notice stated restrictions would be necessary for the region by 1 July 2014 if there wasn’t sufficient rainfall.
Water Affairs Acting DG Trevor Balzer confirmed to OFM News at the end of June that water levels were such that the restrictions would in fact need to be implemented. Manyoni yesterday gave feedback to council on a report submitted to him on June 23, recommending that level 2 restrictions be implemented, from July 1.

He also recommended that revised tariffs, reportedly 20% higher than normal water prices, be implemented from this date.

Manyoni also recommended to council that relevant notices for level 3 restrictions be advertised for public comment, which if imposed would see residents reportedly paying as much as 40% more than normal for water.

OFM News is still waiting for a response from the Metro on the matter.
