Griekwastad appeal to be filed tomorrow | News Article

Bloemfontein - An informed source has told OFM News that an appeal against both the conviction and sentence of Griekwastad triple murderer Don Steenkamp will be filed on Tuesday.

Steenkamp was earlier this year convicted of the murders of his parents, Deon and Christel Steenkamp, as well as his fourteen-year-old sister Marthella on their farm Naauwhoek in Griekwastad in April 2012. He was also found guilty of raping Marthella and defeating the ends of justice.

Northern Cape Judge President Frans Kgomo last month handed down sentence of 20 years for each of the three murders, 12 years for the rape and four years for defeating the ends of justice, all to run concurrently.

A court official confirmed earlier today that no appeal has been filed yet.

A source close to the case meanwhile told OFM News it is not practically possible to finalise everything today and the appeal will be filed tomorrow.

Due to the fact that he was still a minor at the time the crimes were committed, Steenkamp did not need to apply for leave to appeal. The appeal has to be lodged with the court registrar within 14 days of sentencing.

Steenkamp, meanwhile celebrated his eighteenth birthday two days after starting his sentence at the Kimberley Prison.
