• 1891: Cotton pickers organize union & stage strike in Texas.
• 1958: Premier H.F. Verwoerd assumes duty as Prime Minister and announces an intensification of the apartheids policy in parliament.
• 1979: Jerry Lewis' 14th Muscular Dystrophy telethon raises $30,000,000
• 1989: Thousands of "non-Whites" march and bathe at "Whites only" beaches in a nationwide defiance campaign in South Africa.
• 1984: South Africa adopts constitution.

Arts, Music, TV:

• 1902: Start of Sherlock Holmes "Adventure of Illustrious Client".
• 1908: James Barries "What Every Woman Knows" premieres in London.
• 1925: Melt Jacobus Brink (83), scriptwriter and poet, dies in Cape Town.
• 1994: Circulation of Neth Telegraph/News of the Day reaches 800,000
• 2007: Italian opera star Luciano Pavarotti, hailed by many as the greatest tenor of his generation, dies in his home after a long battle with cancer. Pavarotti visited South Africa in April 2005. He gave his Farewell to Africa concert at the Centurion Cricket ground, at the beginning of which the Buskaid orchestra, helping young Black musicians on South African townships, also performed.

Sports:

• 1881: 1st US Men's Tennis: Richard D Sears beats William E Glyn (6-0 6-3 6-2).
• 1925: 1st international handball match held.
• 1989: Chris Evert defeats 15-year-old Monica Seles for her 101st & last US Tennis Open singles victory
• 2007: Mpho Gift Leremi, Mamelodi Sundowns soccer player, who has also represented Bafana Bafana, dies after losing control of his car in Brackensdowns, next to Alberton on the East Rand.
