MSF slams international Ebola response

MSF slams international Ebola response | News Article

Bloemfontein - International humanitarian organization Médecins Sans Frontiérs, or Doctors without Borders, has slammed the international community for failing to react appropriately to the worst Ebola outbreak in history.

Addressing a sitting of United Nations member states in New York today, MSF President Joanne Liu denounced world leaders for failing to deploy of resources to West Africa.

She said despite repeated calls for intervention by MSF, the international response has been “lethally inadequate”.

MSF South Africa Director of Communications Borrie la Grange has meanwhile praised South Africa for sending a mobile laboratory and staff to Sierra Leone to help in the fight against Ebola.

He adds, however, that not nearly enough is being done in the overall fight against the outbreak.

La Grange says MSF is providing care to two out of every three officially declared Ebola patients but fears they are running out of capacity.

He illustrates this with the situation in Monrovia.

La Grange says aside from the response by government, ordinary members of the public and medical professionals can also assist in the fight against Ebola. He says MSF is in desperate need of infectious disease experts to join its ranks, work in the field and also contribute towards training others on how to isolate Ebola cases.

Ordinary South Africans can also assist with financial donations. If you SMS the word “join” to 42110, MSF will receive a donation of R30 to help fund its continuing response to the Ebola outbreak.
