Welkom - More Free State police officers are expected to be arrested today in connection with illegal mining activities in Welkom.
A total of 23 officers from the Welkom and Thabong police stations, as well as Hawks officials, have been arrested so far.
National police spokesperson, Solomon Makgale, would not say how much gold is estimated to have been stolen, saying that information would be presented in court.
Makgale says after their court appearance tomorrow, the officers will have been served with letters informing them that there is an intention to suspend them.
He says four cars, cash and tools used for illegal mining were seized during the arrests.
The charges range from contravention of the precious metals act, defeating the ends of justice, money laundering, theft and corruption.
