Bloemfontein - History was made in central SA when an intricate cornea transplant was performed in Bloemfontein recently - this after only a handful of these operations have been performed elsewhere in South Africa.
Ophthalmologist Cor Van Zyl, who performed the two-hour operation, says patients can now undergo surgery, specific to the area of the cornea that is involved in the disease.
Van Zyl was trained to perform this specific operation in the United States. He says tissue such as the cornea is scarcely donated and there is a big shortage.
