'Private sector controls the economy'─── REFILWE GAESWE 09:20 Sun, 19 Oct 2014
Bloemfontein - The economy is in the hands of private enterprises.
This is according to Thabo Meeko, chairperson of the economic committee in the Free State Legislature. He was speaking during the committee’s sight visit to mining companies in the Moqhaka Municipality, Kroonstad on Friday.
Meeko says the biggest stake of the economy is not in government's hands although government does contribute a percentage.
He says the committee met with mining companies to understand their role and contribution to the province.
Meeko explains that some of the issues discussed were the living conditions of the mine employees and how the community can benefit from mining.
Meeko says the mining industry hasn't only declined in the Free State but globally.
He says mining however still remains fundamental as there hasn’t been any significant economic increase in other industries.
