Four from North West slapped with fine for animal cruelty | News Article

Lichtenburg - Four people were fined in the Lichtenburg Magistrate's Court this week for producing the banned delicacy foie gras, or duck liver paté.

Following admissions of guilt the four were fined R10 000 each.

Charges in terms of the Animal Protection Act had been laid against a couple identified only as Mister and Mrs Diedericks, their daughter Tharina Berriman and her husband Terrence Berriman by the National Council of SPCAs.

Ducks were being force-fed on their farm, Bon Canard, to produce the delicacy. The birds were kept in small plastic and wire cages and were unable to move. The farm has since been closed.

The SPCA's Grace de Lange says the 107 ducks that were confiscated had to be put down.
