DA demands answers on Macufe budget─── REFILWE GAESWE 15:29 Wed, 22 Oct 2014
Bloemfontein - The DA in the Free State wants the Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation MEC, Mathabo Leeto, to account for her department’s financial management of this year's Mangaung Cultural Festival.
The DA’s Roy Jankielsohn says it is alleged that the department failed to draft a budget for this year’s festival. He says it is very important that any government money is spent within the necessary processes.
Jankielsohn says Macufe has cost the province on average between R30 and R40 million per year since it was launched in 1997. He emphasizes that other arts festivals are able to sustain themselves with little or no assistance from government, while Macufe continues to place financial burdens on the cash strapped province.

Jankielsohn says he submitted a written question to Leeto today asking her for clarity around the financial management of the festival.
Jankielsohn explains in a statement that the DA needs to know whether the department compiled a budget for the 2014 Macufe festival before the preparations for the event began: if not, why not; if so, when was the budget compiled and what was the total budget and the budget subtotal for each line item.
The DA also wants to know what were the actual direct amounts spent and what was the total direct income generated by the department for Macufe 2014.
