Kroonstad - The name of the traffic officer killed when a truck ploughed into him and a colleague while they were investigating an accident scene where another truck had rolled over, has been released.
Free State spokesperson for the Department of Police Roads and Transport, Hillary Mophethe, says 28-year old Thabiso Manoto from Sasolburg, died at the scene along the N1 near Kroonstad yesterday.
He and his critically injured colleague, Meshack Ngwenya, were busy attending to an earlier accident when the truck hit them as well as a police vehicle, a traffic vehicle and a fire truck.
It is believed that the truck driver was busy with a WhatsApp message on his cell phone when the accident happened.
Mophethe again stressed government’s vision to decrease road accident figures with 50% by 2020.
Mophethe says Ngwenya is in a critical but stable condition in hospital, while the truck driver has been released from hospital.
