NWU identified as partner institution to resume SA human vaccine trials | News Article

Bloemfontein - Science and Technology Minister Naledi Pandor says the North West University has been identified as a partner institution for the development of a facility that will hopefully see South Africa resume its role in human vaccine trials.

Pandor said in a public lecture presented by the Department of Education at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein last night, that South Africa is not yet a frontier of innovation and needs to develop its knowledge based economy.

She says the trial facility, which will be jointly established by the Department of Science and Technology, the Health Department and a major international corporation, will help the country reach the point where we can develop our own drugs and vaccines.

Pandor says the department has already indicated its intentions regarding the facility in its budget speech and hopes to make more concrete announcements early in 2015.
