Potchefstroom - The driver of a truck involved in a fatal accident Tuesday night outside Potchefstroom is expected to appear in the local Magistrate’s Court today on a charge of culpable homicide.
North West police has confirmed that the 31-year-old driver was arrested early yesterday morning after he allegedly made a u-turn in the road.
A bakkie with five occupants, the Van Schalkwyk family from Potchefstroom, collided with the truck. The driver of the bakkie, Hendriko van Schalkwyk, died at the scene. His eldest son, eight-year-old Jan Hendrik, later died in the Potchefstroom Hospital.
His wife Karen’s step-grandmother, Joey Eybers, says the couple's five-year-old son Marco has since been transferred from the Potchefstroom Hospital to the Sunshine Hospital in Johannesburg.
He joins his mother Karen and five-month-old baby sister, Roelien, who was transferred to this hospital after the accident. Eybers says they are all in a stable condition. She says Karen broke her arm and leg and will have surgery
today.
