Potchefstroom - The mother of three who was critically injured in a horrific accident in Potchefstroom that claimed the life of her husband and eldest son earlier this week is recovering in Sunshine Hospital in Johannesburg after undergoing surgery today.
Alet Steyn, mother of Karen van Schalkwyk, says details are still sketchy as her daughter has just come out of theatre but she appears to be stable, if still critical. She says she will remain in contact with the hospital through the night and return to Johannesburg tomorrow to visit her daughter.
She spent some time with the two surviving children, five-year-old Marco and five-month-old Roelien, today and says they are doing much better:
A trust fund has meanwhile been established to provide financial assistance to the Van Schalkwyk family. Payments into the account and spending will be regulated by an independent auditor and a lawyer.
Payments can be made to NG Welsyn Potchefstroom, Absa cheque account number 680 440 980 under the reference account 2: Van Schalkwyk.
