Maluti-a-Phofung Economic Zone a pipedream: DA─── THANDI XABA 09:40 Sat, 22 Nov 2014
Harrismith - The Democratic Alliance (DA) says the Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality's Economic Zone and Logistics Hub is a pipedream.
The DA's Leona Kleynhans says it will be difficult for the municipality to bring huge potential economic growth and job opportunities for the thousands of unemployed people in the area amidst their high debt.
Kleynhans says investors are less likely to invest in a municipality that is falling apart.
Eskom has repeatedly threatened to cut off the municipality's electricity supply due to non-payment. Maluti-a-Phofung is technically bankrupt with debt of almost R1 billion.
Furthermore Eskom is owed almost R600 million, and residents' payment rate is below 40%.
In the midst of this the Executive Mayor, Vusi Tshabalala is allegedly refusing to cut illegal connections or cut-off electricity to residents who don’t pay.
